Protect Your Off-Line Cooling Systems This Winter

Learn how to lay-up a cooling tower or cooling system for the winter?

Learn how to lay-up a cooling tower or cooling system for the winterAs we approach the cooler weather, it is not uncommon for some cooling systems to be shut down for winter and long term seasonal storage.  Left unprotected, these systems are typically susceptible to harmful bacteria, elevated corrosion concerns and general fouling.  Unfortunately, this can lead to increased springtime labor, elevated repair costs, unexpected down time and several operational issues.

The most common problem experienced with improper cooling system storage is system piping corrosion.  The corrosion process results in the formation of iron scale or what is commonly referred to as pipe-slag.  When the system is returned to service, this pipe slag breaks off, sometimes in large pieces that can fill hot decks, clog distribution nozzles, overload strainers and even plug condenser tubes.

Bond Water Technologies offers a solution for minimizing off-line storage corrosion by using Bond 8080 Moly-Film Inhibitor.

Suggested System Protection and Shut-Down Procedures:

  • Prior to shutdown, decrease cycles of concentration to minimize drop out of dissolved and suspended solids.
  • At the same time, add a non-oxidizing biocide at maximum label dose along with a dispersant or biofilm cleaner.
  • Add Bond 8080 Moly-Film Inhibitor at the prescribed dose and circulate through the system for as long as possible, preferably for at least a few days.
  • After shut down, completely drain the system and power wash or flush all mud and debris from the tower basin.
  • If the condenser or heat exchanger is to be laid up wet, drain and flush the unit, then refill with fresh make-up water along with a non-oxidizing biocide and Bond 8080 Moly-Film at maximum recommended level.

Following these suggestions will reduce cooling system storage corrosion, extend equipment life and minimize or even eliminate costly operational problems come springtime.  Ask your Bond service technician how we can help you with a pre-treatment plan and application of Bond 8080 Moly-Film Inhibitor for your system today.
