DAF Issues & Chemicals That Reduce BOD, TSS, FOG John Dunford Waste Water Specialist Bond Water Technologies

John Dunford Waste Water Specialist Bond Water Technologies

The below video is of a dissolved air flotation system (also known as a DAF) at a major food processing customer.

The customer contacted Bond Water Technologies to evaluate and reduce the amount of TSS –  total suspended solids,  BOD –  biochemical oxygen demand and  FOG – fats, oils and greases in their processed effluent in hopes of lowering their surcharges and getting back in favor with the local POTW – publicly owned treatment works.

As the video shows we reduced surcharges, chemical expenses and saved the customer $25,000…

  1. We reduced surcharges for TSS, BOD and FOG – TSS and free oil removal have resulted in surcharges being reduced by 75%!
  2. We reduced specialty chemical expenses – Specialty chemical expenses have been reduced almost 40% using Bond Water Technologies products!
  3. They got back in favor with the local POTW!
  4. CUSTOMER SAVINGS = $25,000!

Here is how we assessed the issues and solved the problem…

After an evaluation of the plant operations, wastewater stream strengths, treatment equipment and treatment chemistry a plan was initiated. Our major challenge is that the DAF is undersized from an influent water flow and strength standpoint.  The “air to solids ratio” is too low to properly float the solids with acid cracking chemistry and results in carryover.

Our plan was to implement a more “friendly floating” chemistry to simply remove TSS and free oil.

As we explain in the video our goals were to…

  1. Reduce surcharges for TSS, BOD and FOG?
  2. Reduce specialty chemical expenses?
  3. Get back in favor with the local POTW?
  4. Develop a monitoring system for the operators?
  5. Provide a training program for the operators?

When we were done we had addressed DAF Issues & Chemicals That Reduce BOD, TSS, FOG…
